Everybody’s doing a brand-new beer, now. Come on baby, do the Commotion Lotion. I know you’ll get to like it if you give it a chance now. A chug-a chug-a motion like a railroad train, drink it nice and easy, now, don’t lose control. A little bit of bucky and a lot of soul. This beer from Ciudad del Wexico from the minds ofsome bret loving cheeky fuckers is full balls. FULL. BALLS.
Now I’ve got that 80’s gem stuck in your brain, let’s get down to business. In the underbelly of one Simon Lambert & Sons public house in Wexford town spawned a Yellowbelly. The seed of this spawn comes from possibly one of the nicest & most fun guys in the beer business I’ve ever known, one Declan Nixon. Mostly known for his Otterbank chicanery, this one man palate challenger has overseen some of the most exciting beers to hit the Irish market, that frankly gives any of the heavy hitters from the U.S. I wank on about a solid run for their money.
‘Commotion Lotion‘ is a lager based beer loaded up with Wexford’s finest strawberries (and Wexford does strawberries better than ANYWHERE else in Ireland), raspberries & pineapple. And some tonic wine. Yup, you read that right. Tonic Wine. AKA Buckfast. AKA. Buckie. AKA Fuckedfast. AKA Lurgan Champagne. AKA Commotion Lotion. Now you understand where the name of the beer comes from.
The beer opens from the can with a strong opening salvo of fruit. Immediately, I think this bodes well. I’ve previously reviewed their lager, & I’m a fan of it. If that was the base for this, it was a solid choice. There’s a faint whiff of buckfast once you jam your nose in the glass. I’m glad it’s faint. I’ve never been a fan of buckie. It was never my jam.
The first taste is incredibly summery. Bright summer red fruits with a pineapple tartness. The pineapple sweetness is thankfully not pronounced, but you know for damn sure its in there. The ensemble experience is one that plasters a huge smile on your face. This is a beer that finds enjoyment in its simplicity & its front loaded fruitiness. I think without the buckfast in there to give that syrup dry finish, the beer would suffer & be incomplete.
This is one for fun. And, one you should not miss out on trying.
